  • REVIEW: Patience - Third Time Lucky

Leeds five-piece band Patience, formerly known as Japanese Raccoon Dog, are coming out with their debut EP Third Time Lucky this week and the six-song-long release is definitely one to listen to. Drawing inspiration from well-known bands such as Paramore, Holding Absence, American Football and Biffy Clyro, the mathrocky Midwest emo band focuses on topics of struggle as means of carving an optimistic mutual future. Four songs from the EP, ‘Whatever It Takes’, ‘I’ll Be Fine’, ‘Bliss’ and ‘Trust’ have been released as singles so far. The introductory track ‘Swept Away’ is fifty-three seconds long with no vocals. It's a quick and easy way to show the listener just what the EP is going to be like, as the melody is similar to the one in the upcoming songs, but without having to dip much more than a toe into the the release. The next song, ‘Whatever It Takes’, was the band’s debut single. Released in the February of 2024 - over a year ago now - the track continues immediately from the melody of the previous one, creating a smooth transition into the soft vocals of the femme lead of the band. Starting off with a prominent bass line, that pairs excellently with the punchy drums, the melody swiftly picks up and adds electric guitar into the blender as well. ‘I’ll Be Fine’, the third track on Third Time Lucky, goes straight into those beautifully written guitar lines so typical of mathrock and Midwest emo, making the sound little heavier from the beginning. The usage of synth in some parts compliments the overall harmony, making the instruments balanced and not overwhelming. The fourth song and the latest single, ‘Bliss’, continues with the faster paced music, utilising a few elements of more radio-oriented rock in the melody. Sounding very familiar to Paramore’s music, the band doesn't push the boundaries so far in this song, preferring to go with a more traditional and timeworn approach. The same is true for the fifth song ‘Evergreen’ and the last song on the album, ‘Trust’. Although the three tracks share these similarities, the last one uses a different rhythm to the previous two - however, the relative similarities can make the listening experience feel prolonged, with not much distinct changing for some time. The vocals of the lead singer are the best distinguisher of the three songs, and they fit together with the instruments tremendously. ‘Evergreen’ consists of some very memorable guitar riffs, and a beautiful build up that goes straight into more guitar and drum action, while ‘Trust’ has an emotional bridge, that once again showcases the guitarist’s skills. Third Time Lucky is a well crafted debut album, that does well to showcase the potential of the band to the listeners while simultaneously walking the path of certainty in terms of how the music sounds. Although sometimes the tracks felt long and repetitive, Patience confirmed that they are capable of incorporating interesting elements in their crafts, making the listener stay for more. The harmony between guitar, bass and drums is well executed and does not feel overwhelming, with lots of space left for the vocals to solidify the experience. It's absolutely an interesting piece to listen to for anyone who is looking for something a bit different, with the veil of well known music over the top. Score: 7/10 Third Time Lucky will be released on April 4th 2025. Words: Katerina Stepanikova Photos: Patience

  • PREVIEW: Higher Walls - So Much, For So Long, For So Little - No End EP

Higher Walls are a London-based hardcore quartet, that fuses blisteringly fast guitar work, polyrhythmic drumming, and technical bass to create a sound unlike any other band on the London hardcore scene. Formed in 2020 by Jordan Kaad (vocals), Radu Ghidirim (guitar) and Stefan Babara (drums), Higher Walls have built a catalogue of heavy hitting technical music that is proudly grounded in the traditions of bands such as Raised Fist, Terror and Antagonist A.D., whilst also blending the ferocious energy of bands similar to Trap Them, Gaza and Nails. The band were joined by Chris Sparrow (bass) in 2024 and, with a refreshed outlook, released the Tear Them Down EP - setting the bar tremendously high for the quality and passion to expect going forwards. They have exceeded all expectations with their upcoming EP No End, which is the best representation of the band to date; including six tracks of intense hardcore, with themes ranging from the bleak landscape we currently find ourselves in globally, to the people in power, as well as future generations finding it difficult to make positive change. As a special treat, ahead of the release of single 'So Much, For So Long, For So Little' tomorrow, Out Of Rage has been given exclusive opportunity to share the new single a little bit early for all of you reading - so check out the video below to hear the track in all of its vitriolic glory! Higher Walls had plenty to say about the new song too, with this uncompromising and unequivocal statement on the lyrical content found within: "The second single from our EP No End. 'So Much, For So Long, For So Little' speaks of the widening class divide in the UK and the brazen incentive for governments, the global elite and big business to prioritize profits over people. This is of course nothing new, but there is an obvious arrogance to this now. Government contracts being given to friends, dismantling administrative departments to further individual agendas and perpetuating endless war to maintain cordial global relations. We must call out injustices and not give in to hate." With the uncompromising energy within, combined with the vicious vocals and devastatingly scathing political lyrics, it's abundantly clear that Higher Walls are on the warpath and will not settle until the decimation of all that divides us is complete. Now, all we can do is spin this until the EP is out later this month! New single 'So Much, For So Long, For So Little' will be released tomorrow on April 4th 2025. No End will be released on April 25th 2025. Words: Jake Longhurst Photos: Higher Walls

  • LIVE FROM THE PIT: Metal To The Masses Manchester: Quarter Finals 3

Once more on a quiet Sunday evening, with the sun finally shining in Manchester, metal fans converged at Rebellion’s doors to watch some incredible live music and support a well loved local venue. With the sheer amount of talent on display that evening, it was no surprise that the audience were pumped and ready to go. And with only three more rounds to go until the all important final, and a coveted spot at Bloodstock, the competition was well and truly heating up for the remaining bands. Taking the opening spot of the event is never an easy feat. Already full of nerves, wondering if the audience will be receptive that early in the evening, and wondering if you’ll have to work even harder to bring the energy. 6pm rolled around, and Pew Pew Laser Force showed that none of that mattered, and they slammed full force onto the stage. The high octane performers, coupled with the shrouded mystery of glowing techno masks left the audience reveling in the vigour this band poured into their set. Pew Pew Laser Force have created a dynamic niche in the metal market, combining seemingly traditional techno music with metal vocals and riffs. The audience were in the palm of their hands for the entire 30 minute set, responding to call and response and moshing along to the well realised music this band were putting out. With only one released single this was a monumental set for Pew Pew Laser Force, and truly earned them the crowd vote. PPLF Second to grace the stage, and worlds away from the previous act, came the band with the most ingenious name and staging in perhaps the whole competition, Shred Dibnah. Bringing the fun to the competition, Shred Dibnah had it all. Bringing enjoyment with their lyrics and song titles including, ‘Middle Lane Moron’, mixed with impressively meaty guitar riffs that could be felt all the way in the back of the room. The points for creativity have to go to Shred Dibnah, they literally had a smoking chimney taking centre stage and that sums them up so well. The embodiment of old school heavy metal and simple jollification. Unfortunately, Shred Dibnah did not end up advancing to the next stage, and this may have been affected by their slot time. Sandwiched between two very high energy bands, they seemed to lose out when it came to audience interaction as the liveliness had somewhat died down. But bringing the classic elements to a competition that features a lot of new wave metal, is a daunting and exciting feat that they pulled off brilliantly. Shred Dibnah The subsequent group to Shred Dibnah were the surprisingly fleet-footed Incarnage. Bringing some buoyancy back to the competition, Incarnage were the melodic metalcore group the night needed. Blending impressive vocals, with rhythmic melodies and heavy bass riffs, Incarnage are a truly realised band. With elements similar to bands like Bullet for my Valentine and Trivium, you can see where the five piece have taken inspiration from but twisted it to fit their own unique form of performance. Halfway through the set, the band's agile abilities came into play, with both the singer and bassist taking a trip through the crowd. Floating around a crowd that are thrashing around you is a strenuous task, pair that with carrying a stellar set and not dropping a single note and it becomes almost impossible. But Incarnage found a way. Treating every individual in the crowd as if they were the only ones there whilst simultaneously bringing the room as a whole closer, Incarnage were putting in the work to back up their musical prowess. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to advance them further in the competition, but we have no doubt that this band will succeed on to great things. Incarnage The final competitor of the evening, and winners of the judges vote, were the insanely alluring VMBRA. Taking to the stage, this captivating quartet knew exactly who they were from the off. Blending striking, meaty riffs with supremely powerful choruses, VMBRA were incredible. Not at any point did it feel like VMBRA were not completely at home on that stage, you could sense the fun they were having from wherever you were standing in the room. Spirit and soul were flowing through them, and the genre fusion they exhibited was insane. Clearly taking inspiration from many musical influences, not necessarily all from within the metal world, there was a beautiful blend of groove with profoundly mind melting riffs. It is not only musically that VMBRA excel, their visuals were on lock as well. Being a female fronted band is not easy in this industry, and unfortunately not as common as it should be, but when VMBRA strode onto the stage with keys and vocals being performed by the enigmatic Ai, it makes you wonder how this is the case. Truly captivating and original, it is no surprise that VMBRA were the final band of the evening to advance in the competition. VMBRA Once again, the Metal to the Masses team, and Rebellion had put on an immense night of live music, recognising unsigned artists and giving them a platform. The competition carries on further into the year, with the grand final taking place in May. If the calibre of the quarter finals was anything to go by, audiences are in for a treat. Every corner of this lineup is stacked, and exciting bands can be found wherever you end up (potentially with some lovely fish and chips) Our picks for the weekend include: Long Goodbye, Native James, Shooting Daggers and Still In Love, but this is only scratching the surface. • 10 Bands you should definitely see at Desertfest

Doom Metal rests strong upon the throne of London’s underground metal scene. Like a mighty king, it sits, fat and satisfied - stretching its iron-clad fingers across the Isles, crowning riff-lords with every thunderous downstroke. It is the hitmaker of our time, spawning more successful subjects than you can shake a sceptre at. And if Doom Metal is king, there is no greater cathedral than the mighty Desertfest, the greatest celebration of reef and riff on planet earth. It is a magical time, where the faithful gather in droves across Camden Town like a herd of cloaked, beer-soaked penguins waddling between venues toward their great pilgrimage. All are acolytes of the mighty riff and all of its stalwart alterations. It’s also an age of discovery, to see what can be done to this consecrated subgenre, what advances and innovations await the starved faithful. Beyond the headliners, there lies a den of unsung riff-wielders waiting to rattle your bones in all manner of new ways. We’re talking about the deep cuts, the strange ones, the bands you didn’t know you needed in your life until they obliterate your senses. So, strap your helmet on, grind your teeth, and prepare for battle - here are ten other bands you need to see at this year’s almighty D-fest. OLDBLOOD First up, OLDBLOOD, hailing from the industrial wasteland of North London. Opening with an exciting one, Oldblood actually started in 2018 and showed a promising beginning with ‘Arms to the Sky,’ combining just about any metal subgenre you can think of into a harrowing cocktail that makes the blood run cold. They are the sonic equivalent of a bad trip in an abandoned slaughterhouse. With new singles coming out hot and fast, and some new blood in their lineup, Oldblood are ready to inject some of that London gloom into your veins once again. A welcome addition to the lineup and possibly the start of bold new digs for the band. CASTLE RAT Following them are doom darlings CASTLE RAT from the Big Apple. Metal ‘zines are foaming at the mouth over them, and for good reason. The mediaeval lovechild of the film Excalibur and an early Nazareth record, they were practically launched headfirst into prominence due to their spacey production and insanely good aesthetic. They are hands-down the best looking band at the festival, chiefly in part of rhythm guitarist and singer Riley Pinkerton, who looks like a Frazetta painting just sashayed off the canvas to conquer the world. They are sure to excite those with a penchant for sword and/or sorcery. Their set is going to be a battlefield. Get there early or prepare to be hewn in twain. PLANET OF ZEUS From the sprawling Attic basin comes Hellenic riff-slingers PLANET OF ZEUS. Having been around the block since 2000, these guys are the archons of the Greek doom metal scene and their sound is as colossal as their name suggests. It isn’t any wonder that they are back to rock the house in lowly London once again, bringing some of that much-needed Athenian heat to our cold, cold hearts. A Planet Of Zeus show is like being at the sort of parties you wish you were invited to at school, a boomtown bacchanalia. Yiamas! STONED JESUS Like a great leviathan starring from the earth comes STONED JESUS from Ukraine. ‘I’m The Mountain’ is a modern doom standard in a similar vein to ‘Unchained Melody’ and ‘The Rite Of Spring.’ With a controlled command of multiple genres, they wield the breadth of musical innovation that stretches as vast as the steppe of their homeland. Proudly Ukrainian, defiantly powerful, and ready to remind us all what real resilience looks like through the common language of pure, face-melting riffage. SONS OF ALPHA CENTAURI And let’s not forget SONS OF ALPHA CENTAURI – D-fest vets who first graced the main stage back at its inaugural festival in 2012. If riff-rock was a meal, these guys would be a Michelin-starred lobster feast served on a gold-plated anvil. This year, they return to their instrumental beginnings, bringing towering walls of distortion, introspective interludes, and enough sonic weight to collapse your lungs. There’s no ambiguity here, the reason you should see these guys is because they’re good. Really good. BOBBIE DAZZLE If the sturm und drang of doom metal is getting you down, D-fest’s serotonin jolt comes in the form of BOBBIE DAZZLE, your prescription musical Prozac. After departing from doom band Alunah, Bobbie Dazzle is the project of one Siân Greenaway who decided that sometimes the sun must come out even on rainy days. This one is a testament to the diversity of Desertfest’s offerings; delivering punchy hooks, catchy choruses, and riffs pulled straight from an era where free love and Levi Jeans ruled the earth. Bobbie Dazzle is proof that sometimes D-fest isn’t just for the bearded and bell-bottomed doomlords - it’s for people who actually want to enjoy themselves, too. If you skip this, you probably hate fun. Sorry. FROGLORD Ribbit. They came from beyond space to enslave the earth. Ribbit. Croak. It’s FROGLORD. They are a doom metal band that dress up like frogs and write colossal riffs. When they’re not driving their motorcar down Toad hall, they can be found in the swamps of Bristol. Beginning as a one-frog project during the pandemic, they leapt from the lily pad to every major swamp in Britain. With vocals slimier than a BP oil spill and riffs so ribbiting it makes you croak with anticipation, they provide less of a stage presence and more of a precursor to the Great Amphibian Awakening of 2026. You have been warned. Ribbit. GREEN MILK FROM THE PLANET ORANGE Please clear the way for GREEN MILK FROM THE PLANET ORANGE, all the way from Tokyo, Japan. Experimental (or just plain mental) whirlwind of J-rock absurdity that hits like a gunshot to the gonads delivered with the force of a derailed Shinkansen. It really has to be seen to be believed, as the great Crowbar described; sonic excess in its purest form. If you are frothing at the mouth for some seriously novel and ferociously realised adventures into the realm of musical possibility, then look no further. These fine folks will help you realise that long-awaited Spongebob-ian pursuit of acquiring a taste for free-form jazz. BARBARIAN HERMIT Meanwhile, BARBARIAN HERMIT ask just one crucial question: Are you from Manchester? If yes, you already know the deal. If no, then it’s time for a brutal crash course in northern life. With riffs as thick as chimney smoke, the Hermits are ready to make initiates from non-believers. It’s fun, it’s awesome, it absolutely rips hard. And if you’re still not convinced, their new album will flatten you into a Mancunian pancake. Need we say any more? EARTH Last but certainly not least are drone titans EARTH from Washington state. They are a bigger band than any on this list, yes. But it appears that their presence has not been hyped up as much as we would have hoped. 1993’s ‘Earth 2’ wrote the handbook on drone. It’s the type of music you feel in your stomach when the bass rattles the air. They also have tenure, being around longer than anybody on this list. Hell, even if you are of the cowboy-inclined, their 2005 album ‘Hex’ will have you dancing, dancing, saying that you will never die. Every single doom band at this festival owes them a tithe. This is where the term ‘heaviness’ originates, this is the very blueprint. Like Godflesh last year, Earth will provide D-fest with a much deserved sprinkling of ambient heaviness, waiting to turn your eardrums into fine mush. Bow down. There you have it, unmissable bands at Desertfest 2025. It will be a wonderful family reunion once more; the faithful gathering, the amplifiers humming their warm song, the drink and mirth flowing like a river of bad decisions. Whether you’re here for the soulful wailing of Zeal & Ardor, the amphibian insurgency of Froglord, or the sun-baked euphoria of Bobbie Dazzle, one thing is certain – you are now part of the ritual. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. Keep the faith. And prepare for obliteration. Some of the most riveting memories of the year are about to be made. See you in the pit. Words: Kiarash Golshani

  • RANKED: The Top 10 Bullet For My Valentine Songs

Bullet for My Valentine (often abbreviated to BFMV) are a heavy metal band from Wales. The band is currently composed of Matt Tuck (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Michael Paget (lead guitar, backing vocals), Jason Bowld (drums), and Jamie Mathias (bass guitar). The band was originally formed in 1998 under the name Jeff Killed John, however due to a change of style in music the band changed their name and secured a five album deal with Song BMG. Thus was born, The Poison, which hauled them to success. The band has sold over one million albums in the United States and over 3,000,000 albums worldwide and are the most-successful act in the Kerrang! Awards category of Best British Band with three wins. Following a sold out arena tour which marked the 20th anniversary of their debut album ‘The Poison’, the band are making their sixth appearance on the Download 2025 line up. Ahead of their main stage set, we are taking a deep dive into 20 years of ferocious music spans from metalcore to hard rock to thrash metal, to rank Bullet for My Valentine’s top 10 songs. 10) JUST ANOTHER STAR 'Just Another Star' is a song that appears on two Bullet For My Valentine EPs; it's featured as the fifth track on Bullet For My Valentine (2004) and the sixth/closing track on Hand of Blood (2005). It was also featured on Disk 2 of the 20th Anniversary Edition of The Poison. Despite this, it seems to be one of Bullet For My Valentine's less popular tracks, only being played live, both on tour and festivals combined, around 13 times over the past 20 years. However for me, not only does this song have the band's signature sound of heavy guitar riffs and Tuck’s legendary contrasting vocals, lyrically - it cuts deep! ‘Your just another star that’s burned out too quickly’ – a memorable line that captures the idea of person/love which once seemed eternal but was actually just temporary. Just Another Star’ stands as a profound exploration of betrayal, self-reflection, and the human desire to find love and meaning amid chaos, giving the track a well deserved place in the 10 top ranking. 9) SCREAM AIM FIRE 'Scream Aim Fire' is the title song of Bullet For My Valentine’s second studio album, ‘Scream Aim Fire’ and is also the highest charting single from the album, reaching number 34 in the United Kingdom UK Singles Charts. This track is aggressive, fast paced and exemplifies the band’s signature metalcore style, featuring high-octane guitar riffs, thunderous drumming, and Tuck’s dual vocal approach—melodic singing and screaming. The song explores themes of the psychological and physical impact of warfare which is a far cry from the themes of love and heartbreak we grew accustomed to seeing in the band's previous work. The music video also complements the song’s themes by using war imagery, which has gained millions of views. 8) THE LAST FIGHT 'The Last Fight' is the second single from Fever, and one of Bullet for My Valentine’s most successful songs. The song is a personal and powerful number from the band about addiction and recovery. Matt Tuck sings about struggle, redemption, and the battle against inner demons. Michael “Padge” Paget performs a guitar solo that adds deep emotion to the song. With features of heavy riffs, melodic vocals, and a catchy chorus, this track showcases the band's maturity and honesty. The Last Fight reached number 82 in the UK Singles Chart, and many reviewers highlighted the song’s emotional depth, praising it as a standout track on Fever. 7) HER VOICE RESIDES This song wastes no time by opening with a harsh scream, a catchy riff and intense drumming - the band's signature energetic start. This track, lyrically, explores themes of heartbreak, longing, and the intense emotional struggles that arise after the end of a romantic relationship. The song captures the distress of a person grappling with the end of a love affair, and ultimately, it serves as a reminder of how love can leave an indelible mark, echoing in our minds long after it's over. This is some of the band's best work lyrically,y making it a hard-hitting track. Tuck’s vocals oscillate between clean singing and harsh screams, giving emotional depth to the song. 6) FOUR WORDS (TO CHOKE UPON) 4 Words (To Choke Upon) is the first single from Bullet for My Valentine’s debut album ‘The Poison’. This track contains some of Tuck’s best lyrics “Soon I’m the one that’s on attack, I can’t wait to return the favour, Look at me now” about achieving success and proving those who doubted him wrong, and the ‘4 words to choke upon’ being “look at me now”. This metalcore anthem features catchy riffs, another iconic guitar solo and fast drums. As well as being the perfect tribute to the band's journey to the top, this song showcases the band's ambition, earning its place at number six on our list. 5) HEART BURST INTO FIRE This track is from the band’s second studio album, Scream Aim Fire which was produced by Colin Richardson, who is known for his iconic work with bands like Slipknot and Machine Head. It is one of Bullet For My Valentine’s more melodic offerings and opens with an emotive guitar intro that sets the tone for the rest of the song. Along with its catchy hooks and memorable chorus, it presents a softer but impactful side of the band and showcases their versatility. This song has been well-received by fans and critics and is often cited in reviews as one of the standout tracks of this album. 4) HAND OF BLOOD Before the band's debut studio album “The Poison”, they released two EP’s, one of which was titled “Hand of Blood”. This track is one of the band's earliest pieces of work and it firmly established their metalcore roots. Along with heavy guitar riffs, Tuck’s vocals alternate between melodic lines and aggressive screams which to this day is Bullet for My Valentine's signature sound. This EP played a significant role in generating a buzz around the band and their debut album. Although never released as a single, Hand of Blood has been a fan favourite over the years and is often included in live setlists. 3) YOUR BETRAYAL Another track with an iconic and instantly recognisable opening. It is impossible to not air-drum along to the beat at the beginning of this song. The track then goes into the first verse where the first vocals on the song are a spine chilling whisper of “Am I going insane?”. This is then followed by a full verse of call and answer/whisper and singing before one of the band's most catchy choruses kicks in. The guitars on this track are the perfect combination of heavy yet smooth, making it an undeniable banger and well deserved place in our top 3. 2) ALL THESE THINGS I HATE (REVOLVE AROUND ME) This is one of Bullet for My Valentine’s most popular songs and from the get-go this track is full of emotion and energy. The clear story-line of a failing relationship and the anger which comes alongside that is perfectly told, captivating and resonates with many fans. The acoustic guitars in the verses made the song stand out amongst others on The Poison album. Along with the electric guitars in the chorus, the acoustic sound creates a beautiful contrast which goes hand in hand with the harmonized vocals of Tuck and Padge, creating even more depth to the song. This was also the band’s highest-charting single released, earning its place at number 2. 1) TEARS DON'T FALL Could it really be anything else other than this Metalcore masterpiece? This is probably the band's most popular and well known song and rightly so. From the iconic opening “Let’s go!” which sends a full generation of metal heads into instant chaos, Matt’s vocals on this track, both clean and screaming, are undeniably amazing. This track also contains an epic guitar solo midway through, which again, is iconic in its own right. This track also demonstrates the strength of the band's song writing skills, being co-wrote by Matt Tuck and Michael Padge. Instantly recognisable from the opening chords alone and the song which was responsible for opening the metal gateway for many “emo” obsessed teenagers in the early 2000’s, ‘Tears Don’t Fall’ takes the well deserved spot at number one. Bullet For My Valentine will be taking to the main stage at Download Festival, alongside headliners Korn, Green Day and Sleep Token. Words: Amy Watson

  • RANKED: The top 10 songs by Spiritbox

With Spiritbox’s appearance at Download Festival on the Apex Stage fast approaching, Out of Rage are delving into their Top 10 tracks. In recent months, we have watched the band reach some rather impressive career milestones. Few months have passed since they headlined 10,000 capacity Alexandra Palace in February; even fewer days have passed since they released their highly anticipated second studio album. In addition to this, Spiritbox are embarking on a headline tour in North America to prime them for such an appearance on the Download stage. At such a heightened stage of their career, there is no questioning what this band are capable of, or even what comes next. Exploring everything from their classics to their newest releases on Tsunami Sea, here is what we have to say. 10) THE RULE OF NINES The coalescence of a heavy sound mixed with hypnotising vocals is exactly what Spiritbox excel at. That is exactly why Rule of Nines made the list. The vocals on this track sound dreamy at first, almost siren-like, despite being sung alongside gritty guitars. This song is one of Spiritbox’s oldest releases, first shared as a single in 2019. So while it is not considered the very start of their discography, it comes close. That is what makes it an essential listen. 9) HURT YOU Structurally, Hurt You is the opposite of Rule of Nines. It is heavy in all areas except for the chorus. The two songs are like parallels, so it makes sense to place them side by side on this list. There is a great breakdown in this which shows how flexible Courtney LaPlante’s vocals are. Whether she is using clean vocals or gutturals, that alone is something that should be recognised as incredibly skilful. 8) JADED Found on their 2023 EP release The Fear of Fear, Jaded takes the spot at number 8. This song contains poetic, introspective lyrics. There is a mournful tone to this one as it bears the energy of being distant from oneself. Of course, this is embellished with the usual Spiritbox flair. 7) THE MARA EFFECT, PART 1 In any circumstance, an artist’s early works should be celebrated. There is no doubt that Spiritbox have earned that celebratory factor with The Mara Effect Pt.1, found on their self-titled EP in 2017. Between the djenty guitar and Courtney LaPlante’s gentle vocal intro, this song is key in uncovering Spiritbox’s origins. And if you’re really stuck, you can listen to the additional two parts on their self-titled album that share this song’s name. It’s all beautifully woven and interconnected. 6) ETERNAL BLUE This song is an emotional pick about being at a low point after being hurt. If you are in to metal – but are also slightly melancholic - this melodic tune with its twinkling synths is for you. It also goes to show that metal bands don’t have to be heavy all the time. Moreover, it exemplifies they are a band that do heavy and gentle impeccably well. 5) NO LOSS, NO LOVE As far as Spiritbox songs go, No Loss, No Love is a little different. Released as a single from Tsunami Sea, it came as a surprise to some. Spoken words are woven in to a song largely comprised of gutturals. The words are not punctuated by Spiritbox’s signature gritty instrumentation, making them almost eerie against the synthesiser backdrop. For those reasons, the song feels experimental. Not only that, it demonstrates that Spiritbox are unafraid of the art of expression and bending the rules in metal. 4) ROTOSCOPE If you like shaking your stuff to metal songs then this is the tune for you. Rotoscope is as heavy as it is rhythmic. Dancing to this song is something that vocalist Courtney LaPlante actively encourages in the band’s live performances. In doing so, she swiftly dismisses the naysayers that say metal isn’t something you can dance to. It is, and this song does everything to prove it. 3) SUN KILLER Arguably, Sun Killer is an underrated fave. Featured on Eternal Blue, the song is like a first page in a book. We are drawn in to hypnosis by harmonious vocals from the start. In this track, the heaviness gradually unfolds. The song was quite an introduction for a modern metal album in 2021. There is no doubt it can leave a lasting impression almost four years on. 2) FATA MORGANA Spiritbox consistently prove they know how to begin their albums with a thunderous bang. Fata Morgana is no different, and that’s what makes it that song. If this tune had a set of lungs, it would breathe life in to the body of Tsunami Sea. There is something dark about the song that arrests the attention of the listener. Debuting and opening with this song at Alexandra Palace in London, there is some assuredness that it will be included in their Download set. 1) HOLY ROLLER Not making Holy Roller number one would be a sure sign of impurity and imbalance in the world. With just over 48 million listens on Spotify, there is no doubt this is a number one track. But it is more than mere data. Between blazing guitar riffs and Courtney’s vocals, Holy Roller is monstrous and wild. Furthermore, it stomps on anyone who dares to say that Spiritbox have not earned their place in the modern metal scene. In the band’s live performances, Holy Roller has been seen accompanied by vicious pyro. Arguably their most famous song, the track stands strong with powerful but violent growls by LaPlante. There is no doubt the Download crowd will move around for this. Traditionally played towards the end of their set, this song guarantees new fans through their live performance alone. Catch Spiritbox at Download Festival, alongside headliners Green Day, Korn and Sleep Token. Words: Shania Richards

  • REVIEW: Air Drawn Dagger - A Guide For Apparitions

After spending time selling out shows at venues such as the legendary Leadmill, and touring alongside Lake Malice, Dream State and AVIVIA, electro-emo trio Air Drawn Dagger are about to release their debut album A Guide for Apparitions, and their fast-growing cult-like fanbase will not be disappointed. Produced by Neil Kennedy (Creeper, Boston Manor) this record is everything we know and love about Air Drawn Dagger, but with some fun additions. With their ability to weave together different genres together, 2025 is set to be the year of the Dagger. The acoustic intro riff that is “inspired by Lamb of God” features backing vocals, church bells, and the sound of rain to give an eery and unsettling feeling before it bursts into their single ‘Sanctifound’, throwing us straight into the mosh pit and introducing us to the album’s protagonists “The Martyrs”. Next up is ‘Sweatin’, which takes us musically on a journey through a more ethereal fantasy, while the lyrics keep the melancholy tone. Getting us headbanging mid song, it keeps listeners on their toes, never knowing which direction the record is going to take them. Echoing out, we are taken to ‘Teeth’ which changes the vibe completely, bringing ghostly beats and an introductory rap before vocalist Maisie jumps in with a voice that could take down a ceiling. This is now back in darker territory, reminding us that this record is filled with macabre mysticism at its core. With a hard breakdown in the chorus, there’s going to be ample opportunity to not only mosh, but also jump and crowd surf when this is inevitably performed live. Finishing with those backing beats to remind you once again - this record isn’t just simple rock. Straight into a dance/mosh pit we go when ‘Skinwalkers’ blasts into your ears, giving us their highest energy song yet. Alongside a heavy drumbeat, we are once again treated to a mid-song switch up to tease us with some backing screams, leaving the listener desperate for more. Need a breather after the first half of this record? You certainly think that you might have the opportunity when ‘Cadavers’ comes in and brings us into the emo section of the album. A slow, vocal start leads you to think this is the slow song all emo lovers know tends to happen mid-album, but instead it changes its energy almost instantly to something that is oh so incredibly fun to hear. With “what does it matter?” being repeated throughout this song, this gives the listeners that concert-leading chant. Now back in the lore of witches and ghosts, we have a spooky beat, in line with its equally spooky title ‘MaidenMotherCrone’. This kicks things off and takes us down the witches’ road to treat us to a heavy goth anthem almost comparable to Evanescence. Already released, ‘Castle’ starts with an Electric Callboy-esque chant going into a deep rock chorus, which once again shows us this bands ability to mix genres with ease. ‘Necromancer’ is the first song on the album you really feel Neil Kennedy’s influence, which gives us probably the weakest song as you can feel the change up from something ethereal and witch-like, to something a bit more boisterous, almost like it was written for another band and just handed over as a filler track. We then jump back into what Air Drawn Dagger do best with ‘Coma’, which gives us an almost rock opera-based track that is both heavy and cosmic, with Maisie’s vocals once again shining through as the highlight of every song. Finishing this album, we have their recent singles ‘Apparitions’ and ‘Bellyaches’, sneaking in some more screams and heavy breakdowns - and even an excellent feature from Trash Boat's very own Tobi Duncan during the former! - to give us an ending that makes you wish there were another ten songs to go. Air Drawn Dagger have really brought their all to A Guide For Apparitions ,with each song telling its own story and together creating a record full of multi-genre-infused rock that gives the listener the experience of a haunted tale mixed with the chaos of a more ethereal sound. Celebrating this release, you can catch Air Drawn Dagger at their biggest show to date on Saturday 5th April at Corporation, in their hometown of Sheffield. Score: 7/10 A Guide For Apparitions will be released on April 4th 2025 via Long Branch Records. Words: Laura Hughes Photo: Riccardo Cenci Media

  • REVIEW: Panchiko - Ginkgo

Originating from Nottingham, England, Panchiko is a British indie rock band formed between 1997 and 1998. Originally the band consisted of Owain Davies as the lead vocalist and guitarist, Andy Wright as guitarist and keyboardist, bassist Shaun Ferreday and drummer John Schofield. For a while, they set aside their dreams of becoming musicians and instead pursued other careers until 2020, when the band reunited and also gained two new members. As their music grew, they played sold out shows to massive crowds and then went on to release their first album in over 20 years. Panchiko’s music has sky-rocketed since the 2000's, with their shoegaze/indie rock sound catching a foothold into pleny of younger fans' taste, and since 2021 they have hit over 10 million streams on Spotify and are currently at 1.45 million monthly listeners, which is incredibly impressive. With the release of Gingko, Panchiko is virtually guaranteed to gain thousands more fans worldwide because of their incredibly unique sound. ‘Florida’ is a beautiful start to the album. The vocals are angelic and pleasing to the ears, feeling like something you can sit back and relax to after a long day and really enjoy, which is something about Panchiko you learn to love. There really is something special about this kind of music. The way the melodic guitar and riffs flow and compliment the vocals of each song let everything melt over you in a glorious fashion. The piano in the title track is wonderfully ethereal and introduces the song in a very delicate way. It also continues throughout in between the verses and is such a great addition to the song. There is something about this song that feels poetically sad. The bass comes in with a slow and sweet riff, which really adds to the melancholic feeling that this song envelopes the listener in. ‘Shady In The Graveyard’ evokes a completely different feeling to the previous song, where the chorus feels more uplifting although still capturing the sound they are known for. This song features rap verses which fit in perfectly - the flow took us back to old-school 90's rap - and while it definitely took us by surprise, we can't deny that it fits perfectly into the song and the overall feel of Panchiko's music. ‘Honeycomb’ will instantly lift your mood. This is an insanely catchy track, with beautifully written lyrics, and a delightful drum beat that'll have you bopping your head along. This song features a lot of lyrics that really stand out, but the ones that stood out the most to us are “Dry cured or love sick, it's hard to depict, you'd have to cross the universe to find something you're happy with” as well as “I'm a nectarine on an orange tree, but you tend to me, I was up all night.” To us, this song talks about love in a way that is delightfully pure, and gorgeously poetic. The next song is much the same in its poetry, but with a different feeling - ‘Shelled And Cooked’ tells a story about a girl named Lucy. The song spoke about loneliness and feeling trapped. There is a guitar solo in this song that breaks it up and when the riffs hit you, it feels like magic. These two songs are absolutely out of this world. ‘Chapel Of Salt’ has a really nostalgic feeling to it. The beginning starts off slow but gradually builds up, and the more the song goes on, the more new sounds keep being introduced. The keyboard, guitar and drumming in this song really come together, and specifically during the chorus become much louder to drive it home. We think that if you’re a fan of shoegaze, you will really enjoy this track. ‘Lifestyle Trainers’ has the same vibe. The unique sounds stand out in this song, at the beginning it reminded the writer of a video game and the high pitched guitar riffs sound mystical. ‘Vinegar’ leans more into the indie rock side of the band, with the slightly distorted vocals and the heavier guitar. The riff that we hear first instantly sets the mood for this genre of music, and as the song progresses the vocals become more loud and straightforward. The passion in Owain's voice is palpable and outstanding! ‘Formula’ contains similar guitar riffs too, although overall the song is a little more mellow. ‘Mac’s Omelette’,‘Subtitles’ and ‘Rise And Fall’ are all deeply emotional songs with hard hitting lyrics and melodious riffs, that make these songs perfect for when you've got time to sit back and reminisce. This whole album is perfect for a long car journey or bus ride, when you've got all the time in the world to listen to music on full blast in your headphones, feeling every word. Panchiko mixed things up a little on the last track ‘Innocent’, but let's just say it ends the album with a bang. You can instantly tell that this song is different from the start, with its groovy beat and funky guitar. The vocals also follow a different rhythm, and it feels clear by now that Panchiko have just about perfected the genre. This whole album is perfect for a long car journey or bus ride, when you've got all the time in the world to listen to music on full blast in your headphones, feeling every word. We truly have no words after listening to this album, is there anything Panchiko can't do? They are incredibly talented, and we are incredibly glad to have seen them growing on and through this amazing journey. Score: 10/10 Ginkgo will be released on April 4th 2025 via Nettwerk. • REVIEW: Glare - Sunset Funeral

Shoegaze band Glare formed in 2017 in Rio Grande Valley, Texas, and have already amassed a sizeable following with their viral hazy tunes. Now, they are on the cusp of releasing their debut LP, Sunset Funeral, on April 4th - a record that promises to bring all the feels, with its main themes focusing on the process of grief, whether it's caused by love or loss. What makes this album special and sets it apart from others in the same genre is the bands’ effort to make it sound as DIY as possible, to the point where it seems like they didn't use any man-made instruments. The lead single introduces the listener to the atmosphere of the album. 'Mourning Haze’, to quote singer and guitarist Toni Ordaz, "is about grief and how dreams play a role in processing it” (“When my eyes shut I see you smiling / Once in a while I hear you call out for me / So stay and dream with me”). The softer vocals contrast nicely with the more energetic instrumentation, creating that repetitive shoegazey feel. 'Saudade’ and '2 Soon 2 Tell’ take the listener even further into the emotionally charged ambience of the record. The former encapsulates the meaning of the Portuguese word perfectly, denoting an emotional state of nostalgic longing for a beloved yet absent someone, while the latter has the type of gut-punching instrumental that makes it stand out and compels the listener to come back to it. Set in the middle of the album, 'Felt’ is an interlude that starts dreamy but slowly becomes somewhat dissonant and eerie, marking the transition to some of the heavier tracks on the record. ‘Nü Burn’ comes right after, with a grittier sound that almost drowns the somewhat indecipherable vocals, still managing however to create an enthralling experience. While touching on the feeling of grief and the way it can paralyze you, the band describes this track as “a big, explosive song and probably our heaviest”. ‘Guts’ was the second single released and is supposed to evoke the feeling of anxiety caused by an all-consuming love. That exact emotion is reproduced through ethereal vocals juxtaposed with the guitar riffs and atmospheric elements (“Lay with me / It consumes your body / Does it feel real?”). ‘Sungrave’ and ‘Different Hue’ bring the album title to life, ending the record with the perfect late-night drive vibe and bringing the listener back to a more dreamy, hazy state of mind. To sum it all up, this album may seem overwhelming at first, but as the songs flow, it becomes an adventure for the senses and offers a variety of instrumental textures - the band's hardcore roots blending harmoniously with softer elements, which provide a distinctive sound. The general vibe of the record is almost trance-like with its gripping tone, feeling overall cohesive. Thus, the 11 songs provide a favourable environment for exploring the kind of feelings that can sometimes be difficult to express accurately in words. Score: 6/10 Sunset Funeral will be released on April 4th 2025 via Deathwish Inc. and Sunday Drive Records. Words: Iulia Furnica Photo: Sam Tellez

  • REVIEW: LUNA KILLS - DEATHMATCH

LUNA KILLS are making waves in the modern metal scene with their debut album, DEATHMATCH. Blending nu-metal, alternative rock, and electronic elements inspired by game soundtracks, the Finnish band delivers an explosive and genre-defying record that’s impossible to ignore. With a fiery live presence and an instantly captivating sound, LUNA KILLS have already set themselves apart in the scene, bringing something fresh and dynamic to the landscape. The album kicks off with 'Love U', a track that immediately grabs attention with its confident mix of bouncy vocals and ferocious screams. Vocalist Lotta’s versatility shines here, effortlessly switching between smooth melodies and intense fry vocals. The electronic elements give the song an added edge, melding perfectly with the distorted guitars and punchy rhythms to create a sound that feels both fresh and familiar. It’s a bold opening statement, setting the tone for the rest of the album. The track effortlessly captures the band’s essence, making it clear that they’re not here to follow trends, but to redefine them. Next up, 'LEECH' keeps the momentum going with its heavy, driving beats and infectious chorus. The electronic effects in the background add an atmospheric quality, while the aggressive guitar riffs and thumping bassline give it that signature nu-metal feel. Lotta’s vocals are once again a highlight, shifting from sharp and commanding to almost hypnotic as the track builds. It’s a perfect example of the band’s ability to blend heavy riffs with modern electronic textures, creating something that feels both polished and raw. The balance between aggression and melody is spot-on, making it one of the album's standout tracks. As we move through the album, 'Hallucinate' stands out as one of the most dynamic tracks here. The high-energy vibe is perfect for live shows, and Lotta’s vocal delivery here is exceptional, fluctuating between sultry verses and intense choruses. The rhythm section is tight, with Samuli Paasineva’s guitar and Lassi Peltonen’s bass driving the track forward in unison. Jimi Kinnunen’s drumming here really takes center stage, with intricate patterns that elevate the track to a whole new level. It’s a song that builds momentum and intensity with every passing second, making it clear that LUNA KILLS knows how to create hooks that stick and riffs that hit hard. The album closes with 'Fever Dream', a track that takes a slightly more atmospheric approach. Beginning with haunting, ethereal vocals and minimal instrumentation, the song slowly builds into a darker, more intense soundscape. The synth elements take centre stage here, with Lotta’s voice layering in beautiful harmonies that create an almost otherworldly feel. It’s a striking way to end the album, showcasing the band’s ability to move beyond just pure aggression and dive into something more nuanced and haunting. Overall, DEATHMATCH is a dynamic and thrilling debut from LUNA KILLS. The band brings together electronic and metal influences in a way that feels exciting and unique. Each track offers a different facet of the band’s sound, from heavy riffs to atmospheric moments, proving that Luna Kills isn’t afraid to take risks. With DEATHMATCH, they’ve certainly made a statement, and it’s clear that this is just the beginning of something big. This album isn't just a debut; it's a promise of what LUNA KILLS is capable of as they continue to carve their own path in the scene. Score: 8/10 DEATHMATCH will be released on April 4th 2025 via SharpTone Records. Words: Jason De Mendonca Photo: Guilty Visuals & Lucy Alienne Visuals

  • REVIEW: Bleed From Within - Zenith

After three years, the Scottish metal powerhouse Bleed From Within are back with quite possibly their strongest outing to date. After 20 years, evolving from deathcore to melodic metal to metalcore, this band have reached their Zenith, the self-proclaimed peak of their career. This album is grand, its bold and it’s a real statement to show off the talent of these Glasgow natives. Off the back of tours with genre giants such as Slipknot and The Ghost Inside, Bleed From Within are absolutely on a warpath for metal domination and this album absolutely reflects that – Zenith opens on ‘Violent Nature’, and right off the bat the album tears into you. Crafted with heavy synths, disgustingly heavy riffs, impressive screams and drums that make you feel sorry for kit being played; this song is an absolute slap to the face. It sucks you in, dominates your attention and drags everything you've got into focus on this band. We here at Rage think there’s a real fine art to making an opening track, and Bleed From Within have absolutely nailed it here – it's epic, it's fierce and is the perfect foreshadowing for the absolute joyride of an album you’re about to endure. It doesn’t stop there though, as immediately afterwards is the incredibly well received hit single ‘In The Place Of Your Halo’. With one of the catchiest choruses the band have ever curated, it makes for some incredible chanting material while moshing, and it definitely felt like that when they debuted the song on tour with Slipknot back in December; fans, first time listeners all, smashed bodies together for this grandiose track that also incorporates bagpipes for some added heritage and atmosphere to incredible effect. Not holding back, the band then throw us into the title track with ‘Zenith’ which to us sounded like a beautiful and brutal rallying call to their fans: it beckons, it demands and takes you into the dark world of Bleed From Within, with guitarist Steven Jones blessing our ears with his majestic and angelic vocals to juxtapose vocalist Scott Kennedy’s rough and punchy unclean vocals; not only those two, but the song features many choral voices to add to its presence. Bleed From Within set the themes up for the album in these songs with more rallying cries on ‘God Complex’ with more catchy and chanty choruses, before bringing it down with the extremely melodic but just as heavy ‘A Hope in Hell’. Continuing on to the impressive ‘Dying Sun’, they tide the album over excellently before arriving at the entirely genius ‘Immortal Desire’, featuring one of the bands heroes in Brann Dailor of Mastodon. This song is so utterly technically impressive, from the use of a choir as an instrument to intro the song, to the simply sublime vocals all round, this is definitely one to keep an eye on. The band then dive into their roots, with the heaviest songs of the album following this, all the while still incorporating plenty of synth and angelic vocals. This carries on all the way up to the epic final track ‘Edge Of Infinity’, as they deiver their most emotionally charged song to complete this saga of an album; bringing in slow piano, acoustic, more atmospheric synth and the two vocalists giving every last modicum of energy to making this track as passionate as possible. Zenith finishes in a magnificently beautiful way, with the screams of Scott Kennedy slowly fading away as we are left with a slow and beautiful piano melody, giving a bittersweet end to one of the best metalcore albums we’ve heard in a long time… Score: 9/10 Zenith will be released on April 4th 2025 via Nuclear Blast Records.
