Bullet for My Valentine (often abbreviated to BFMV) are a heavy metal band from Wales. The band is currently composed of Matt Tuck (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Michael Paget (lead guitar, backing vocals), Jason Bowld (drums), and Jamie Mathias (bass guitar).

The band was originally formed in 1998 under the name Jeff Killed John, however due to a change of style in music the band changed their name and secured a five album deal with Song BMG. Thus was born, The Poison, which hauled them to success. The band has sold over one million albums in the United States and over 3,000,000 albums worldwide and are the most-successful act in the Kerrang! Awards category of Best British Band with three wins.

Following a sold out arena tour which marked the 20th anniversary of their debut album ‘The Poison’, the band are making their sixth appearance on the Download 2025 line up. Ahead of their main stage set, we are taking a deep dive into 20 years of ferocious music spans from metalcore to hard rock to thrash metal, to rank Bullet for My Valentine’s top 10 songs.

10) JUST ANOTHER STAR

'Just Another Star' is a song that appears on two Bullet For My Valentine EPs; it's featured as the fifth track on Bullet For My Valentine (2004) and the sixth/closing track on Hand of Blood (2005). It was also featured on Disk 2 of the 20th Anniversary Edition of The Poison. Despite this, it seems to be one of Bullet For My Valentine's less popular tracks, only being played live, both on tour and festivals combined, around 13 times over the past 20 years.

However for me, not only does this song have the band's signature sound of heavy guitar riffs and Tuck’s legendary contrasting vocals, lyrically - it cuts deep! ‘Your just another star that’s burned out too quickly’ – a memorable line that captures the idea of person/love which once seemed eternal but was actually just temporary. Just Another Star’ stands as a profound exploration of betrayal, self-reflection, and the human desire to find love and meaning amid chaos, giving the track a well deserved place in the 10 top ranking.

9) SCREAM AIM FIRE

'Scream Aim Fire' is the title song of Bullet For My Valentine’s second studio album, ‘Scream Aim Fire’ and is also the highest charting single from the album, reaching number 34 in the United Kingdom UK Singles Charts. This track is aggressive, fast paced and exemplifies the band’s signature metalcore style, featuring high-octane guitar riffs, thunderous drumming, and Tuck’s dual vocal approach—melodic singing and screaming.

The song explores themes of the psychological and physical impact of warfare which is a far cry from the themes of love and heartbreak we grew accustomed to seeing in the band's previous work. The music video also complements the song’s themes by using war imagery, which has gained millions of views.

8) THE LAST FIGHT

'The Last Fight' is the second single from Fever, and one of Bullet for My Valentine’s most successful songs. The song is a personal and powerful number from the band about addiction and recovery. Matt Tuck sings about struggle, redemption, and the battle against inner demons. Michael “Padge” Paget performs a guitar solo that adds deep emotion to the song. With features of heavy riffs, melodic vocals, and a catchy chorus, this track showcases the band's maturity and honesty. The Last Fight reached number 82 in the UK Singles Chart, and many reviewers highlighted the song’s emotional depth, praising it as a standout track on Fever.

7) HER VOICE RESIDES

This song wastes no time by opening with a harsh scream, a catchy riff and intense drumming - the band's signature energetic start. This track, lyrically, explores themes of heartbreak, longing, and the intense emotional struggles that arise after the end of a romantic relationship. The song captures the distress of a person grappling with the end of a love affair, and ultimately, it serves as a reminder of how love can leave an indelible mark, echoing in our minds long after it's over. This is some of the band's best work lyrically,y making it a hard-hitting track. Tuck’s vocals oscillate between clean singing and harsh screams, giving emotional depth to the song.

6) FOUR WORDS (TO CHOKE UPON)

4 Words (To Choke Upon) is the first single from Bullet for My Valentine’s debut album ‘The Poison’. This track contains some of Tuck’s best lyrics “Soon I’m the one that’s on attack, I can’t wait to return the favour, Look at me now” about achieving success and proving those who doubted him wrong, and the ‘4 words to choke upon’ being “look at me now”. This metalcore anthem features catchy riffs, another iconic guitar solo and fast drums. As well as being the perfect tribute to the band's journey to the top, this song showcases the band's ambition, earning its place at number six on our list.

5) HEART BURST INTO FIRE

This track is from the band’s second studio album, Scream Aim Fire which was produced by Colin Richardson, who is known for his iconic work with bands like Slipknot and Machine Head. It is one of Bullet For My Valentine’s more melodic offerings and opens with an emotive guitar intro that sets the tone for the rest of the song. Along with its catchy hooks and memorable chorus, it presents a softer but impactful side of the band and showcases their versatility. This song has been well-received by fans and critics and is often cited in reviews as one of the standout tracks of this album.

4) HAND OF BLOOD

Before the band's debut studio album “The Poison”, they released two EP’s, one of which was titled “Hand of Blood”. This track is one of the band's earliest pieces of work and it firmly established their metalcore roots. Along with heavy guitar riffs, Tuck’s vocals alternate between melodic lines and aggressive screams which to this day is Bullet for My Valentine's signature sound. This EP played a significant role in generating a buzz around the band and their debut album. Although never released as a single, Hand of Blood has been a fan favourite over the years and is often included in live setlists.

3) YOUR BETRAYAL

Another track with an iconic and instantly recognisable opening. It is impossible to not air-drum along to the beat at the beginning of this song. The track then goes into the first verse where the first vocals on the song are a spine chilling whisper of “Am I going insane?”. This is then followed by a full verse of call and answer/whisper and singing before one of the band's most catchy choruses kicks in. The guitars on this track are the perfect combination of heavy yet smooth, making it an undeniable banger and well deserved place in our top 3.

2) ALL THESE THINGS I HATE (REVOLVE AROUND ME)

This is one of Bullet for My Valentine’s most popular songs and from the get-go this track is full of emotion and energy. The clear story-line of a failing relationship and the anger which comes alongside that is perfectly told, captivating and resonates with many fans. The acoustic guitars in the verses made the song stand out amongst others on The Poison album. Along with the electric guitars in the chorus, the acoustic sound creates a beautiful contrast which goes hand in hand with the harmonized vocals of Tuck and Padge, creating even more depth to the song. This was also the band’s highest-charting single released, earning its place at number 2.

1) TEARS DON'T FALL

Could it really be anything else other than this Metalcore masterpiece? This is probably the band's most popular and well known song and rightly so. From the iconic opening “Let’s go!” which sends a full generation of metal heads into instant chaos, Matt’s vocals on this track, both clean and screaming, are undeniably amazing. This track also contains an epic guitar solo midway through, which again, is iconic in its own right. This track also demonstrates the strength of the band's song writing skills, being co-wrote by Matt Tuck and Michael Padge.

Instantly recognisable from the opening chords alone and the song which was responsible for opening the metal gateway for many “emo” obsessed teenagers in the early 2000’s, ‘Tears Don’t Fall’ takes the well deserved spot at number one.

Bullet For My Valentine will be taking to the main stage at Download Festival, alongside headliners Korn, Green Day and Sleep Token.
