REVIEW: Trivium – Struck Dead

If you haven’t heard of TRIVIUM by now you must be living under a rock - they are an American heavy metal band from Orlando, Florida who are known for blending elements of metalcore, thrash metal, and melodic death metal.

TRIVIUM gained major attention with their 2005 album Ascendancy, which featured hits like Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr. Since then, they’ve released several critically acclaimed albums, including Shogun, In Waves, and What the Dead Men Say, earning a reputation for their mix of melody, intensity, and strong musicianship. They remain one of the leading modern metal bands, respected for their energetic live shows and consistent evolution in sound. Even though they have been going for over 20 years, they continue to pull out fresh music which consists of banger after banger.

Bury Me with My Screams showcases TRIVIUM's immense talent and willingness to tackle personal struggles, with MATT HEAFY channelling recent hardships into a powerful performance. The track blends the band’s signature thrash energy with a haunting, melodic chorus, while ALEX BENT's precise drumming and dynamic riffs keep the song intense and evolving.

Struck Dead (Pain Is Easier to Remember) may carry an emotional title, but the song itself is anything but subdued. It bursts to life with a sudden, powerful impact a dense wall of sound driven by PAOLO GREGOLETTO’s deep, resonant bass and ALEX BENT's relentless, precision drumming. BENT’s double-kick technique adds an earth shaking intensity that defines the track’s energy. It’s a commanding, tightly executed piece and a clear highlight of the EP.

The EP concludes with Six Walls Surround Me where TRIVIUM delve deep into their darker sensibilities. It begins delicately, almost classical in tone, providing a moment of calm after the intensity of the earlier tracks. But at over seven minutes long, that calm soon dissolves into a powerful storm of emotion and weight. The result is a track that feels claustrophobic, crushing, yet undeniably cathartic. It reinforces that TRIVIUM aren’t trend-chasers - they face their inner turmoil directly, transforming it into something both brutal and beautiful.

This EP captures TRIVIUM at their most powerful and introspective. Each track showcases a different facet of their artistry. Together, they form a cohesive and compelling statement that highlights TRIVIUM's technical mastery, emotional honesty, and unwavering commitment to evolving their sound. It's fantastic to have new music from them; it’s been a long wait since 2021, but it was worth it.

Score: 8/10
